Honestly, there is no effective way to do this and make them like the ones at your gym. The best thing to do is go to a website that sells home-gymnastics equipment and purchase a home-bar set from them. By doing this, it will save you a lot of time, effort and possibly injuries from not building them correctly.
They made it so you can make the bars wider (farther apart).
The parallel bars are for the men's gymnastics team but the women's routines involve the uneven bars. Hope that helps. :)

Uneven bars for women/girls, and high bars for men/boys. Some are even single bars for level 4 and under in gymnastics.
You *can* but it's definitely not ideal and I wouldn't recommend doing it often. Gymnastics bars are very different from other bars and training a lot on other bars may actually mess you up when you go back to a gymnastics bar.
