The champion only loses the title under a title fight. There are different rules for title fights in many organizations. The champion can have a fight and it not be for the title. An example of this was the fight of Matt Hughes and Joe Riggs. Riggs did not weigh in at the proper weight. Hughes took the fight as a normal fight instead of a title fight.

No; Royce Gracie has fallen out of favor with MMA fans, he got old and stayed too long, and that made a lot of people lose respect for him. The nail in the coffin was his loss to Matt Hughes, who was 15 lbs lighter than him. The whole idea of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the "effectiveness of grappling even against a much bigger opponent." See, Matt Hughes weighs 170 lbs, "barely a welter" so to speak, Gracie though still weighs his traditional 184 lbs, its not MUCH of a weight difference, but Hughes' victory just spits in the face of BJJ in general, its part of the reason why Renzo got so angry over family honor stuff. Personally I don't think Renzo can handle Hughes; come on, Renzo got submitted Carlos Newton who basically beat him by shoving his nasty hair in his face! If anyone is to "avenge" the Gracie family regarding a future fight where Hughes is submitted, it will probably have to be one of the new blood Gracies, it won't be Renzo. Because Royce has fallen out of favor, he is not likely to appear in any MMA games any day now, if you want to play as Royce Gracie, assuming you even have a PS2 somewhere, I recommend the game "PRIDE FC" for the PS2. If you watch footage of Helio Gracie in his prime, and Royce Gracie between 1991 and 1997, in addition to Renzo Gracie's early PRIDE days, and if at all possible rare Brazilian Vale Tudo footage, one thing you will notice consistently about the Gracie family is that they are all lightning fast. I think there is footage of Helio submitting a Judo expert in only 10 seconds.
