An average in darts is simply worked out by : points scored (divided by) darts thrown. This is used for a whole game, so say in one leg you checked out, you would have scored 501 points, but if you lost a leg and were still on 101 you would only have scored 400 points.
In the standard game the line, behind which the player should stand is 2.37 m(7 ft 9¼) for steel tip, soft tip is 8 feet even. This is the standard, recognized by the World Darts Federation.
The brewery credited with establishing the standard throwing distance for darts is the British company Allen's Brewery. In the 1920s, they set the distance to 7 feet 9.25 inches (2.37 meters) from the dartboard, which became widely accepted and remains the standard in the game today. This measurement was formalized further with the formation of the National Darts Association in the UK.

The least number of darts needed to score 501 points in a standard game of darts is 9 darts. This can be achieved by scoring three triple 20s (60 points each for a total of 180 points) and then finishing with three more darts that score 180 points combined, such as two triple 20s and a double 20.
