Krav Maga is a pretty good street fighting system but if you want to feel confident on the street when getting into an altercation it's best to have cross trained in a few different styles. Krav is very good at teaching you to react explosively to a real life situation. All the moves are practical and have purpose, there is nothing for show or flowery included. Taking a krav maga class will make you feel like you've enrolled in a boot camp, with instructors yelling at you, constantly changing the commands and scenarios in order to push you mentally and physically until you break down. The more they do break you down, the better you will be when you bounce back. In krav, they will teach you not to stop until your opponent is down and is not going to be getting back up.

DISCLAIMER: Putting someone down on the street like you will be taught in a krav class may result in criminal charges being filed against you since in many states or countries, you are not allowed to defend yourself after your opponent is no longer a threat. Also, if your opponent is not a perceived threat to witnesses, you can be charged with assault and battery if the court finds you or those you were protecting were not in immediate danger. This is especially hard to argue your way out of beating the crap out of someone who wasn't holding a knife or gun. Be prepared to face the consequences of anything you may do in a streetfight.

How do you start krav maga training?

You need to locate a Krav Maga Training Place. You need to also be aware that most places have a variety of martial arts, or in this case "Fighting Systems". A Karate Dojo may offer Krav Maga, you just have to make some phone calls and ask around. When you pick a Krav Maga training facility you need to find out how the instructors are trained and any affiliation with a larger organization that trains and certifies instructors. Like anything else there are good and bad instructors and facilities. Talk to those training at the site and do some research on line. I operate two Krav Maga facilities in Maryland currently with 22 certified instructors and we are affiliated with Krav Maga Worldwide who has significant credentials in the civilian, law enforcement and military communities. Look for this type of credibility.

Best martial art in a street fight?

What is "best" is always a matter of opinion. The objective of a Martial Art in a street fight is first to survive, and then to prevail with minimal or no injury to one's self. Most systems of Martial Art contain elements that would be successful in street self defense, and could be used effectively depending on the specific circumstances, environment, and other conditions. For example, grappling and ground-fighting can be effective in some cases, but when confronted with multiple attackers, street gangs, or armed attackers, it would be impractical to roll on the ground with one person while being vulnerable to attack from others. The effectiveness of any Martial Art is dependent upon the quality of instruction, the dedication of the student, and the correct application in real-life self defense. A person may be really good in a specific system and another may be bad in another system. It doesn't mean one system is better than the other.

How would a MMA Fighter stand up against a krav maga fighter?

It depends on what kind of fight it is. MMA and Krav Maga are similar. They both take many different martial arts and combine them to be more effective. But they also have big differences. MMA teaches you ring fighting. They will teach you how to do well in things like UFC, or fighting tornaments. There are many rules in MMA. For example, you can not repetively kick somebody in the groin in an MMA competition. Krav Maga, on the other hand, is an extreamly brutal and efficient martial art. There are absolutely no rules in Krav Maga. They will teach you to fight until there is no fight leaft, in other words they teach you to fight until your opponet is physically unable to continue, or dead. (whatever is necassary) So, if you are in some sort of tornament, MMA will probably win, because their training revolves around rules. If its a fight on the streets, Krav Maga will destroy MMA, because on the streets, there are no rules and no refferies to tell you when to stop.*Ultimately it depends on who is better at what they do. Lets say we have two people who are about to fight. Person A does MMA, and Person B does Krav Maga, and they are getting into a street fight. Lets say that Person A has praticed MMA for 30 years, and Person B has practiced Krav Maga for only 6 months. In this case MMA would win because he has much more experience. Krav Maga has only 6 months of experience vs 30 years of experience. So it really depends on who has more experience, and who has more motivation to practice and train hard to do good.
