Actually, Chinese tradition holds that Shuia Jiao was created by the Yellow Emperor; it was the Wrestling style he used, to defeat a tyrant, forget his name. The Yellow Emperor is considered a myth though, and, as is common throughout world mythology, the hero of the myth always beats this tyrant or that in a wrestling match. True story; in virtually all ancient myths, featuring the founding of a country, or the begining of a conflict, a wrestling match is always involved it seems.

Japan, was founded by the winner of a Sumo match, the legendary "son of the goddess Amaterasu," or "son of the sun goddess," the first emperor of Japan, defeated a tyrant in a wrestling match. Wrestling, is very prevalent in world myth, indeed, according to Aztec myth, the "demon" Huitzil Potchili defeated Quetzaquatl in, you guessed it, a wrestling match. One of the things they don't tell you about the Quetzaquatl myth, besides the fact that he was a "white skinned god with a beard," is that he got his rear handed to him by the "red skinned demon" Huitzl. The way some archaelogists interpret this, fringe archaelogists mind, is that in the low odds chance that white supremacists are correct, and ancient Europeans, or European peoples rather, the people of the mythic continent of Atlantis, found their way to the Americas, is that, historically, a white guy got his rear handed to him in a wrestling match against an Aztec native American. Again "red skinned demon" and "white skinned god" come on.... Its possible that the historical Huitzl, was in fact a native American, while the historical Quetzalquatl, may have been a white guy. Of course, the majority of archaelogists do not subscribe to that view. If it elevates the human race in any way, odds are, science does not support it. If it contradicts the view that all modern technology is exclusively white, and that no remote ancient culture ever developed it outside of Europe or the U.S., odds are, science does not support it.

Moving on; the answer is yes, and even before that, actually, to the time of the Qin dynasty, Shuia Jiao is as old as China itself, in fact, it is said that Shuia Jiao and China, are one and the same, China exists BECAUSE of Shuia Jiao. Japan exists because of Sumo, China exists because of Shuia Jiao, even far away Ireland, actually, exists because Lugh, the sun God, defeated his evil Fomori grandfather in, yes that is correct, a wrestling match. According to Irish myth, Lugh outwrestled his grandfather, and when he had beaten him, drove a spear through his eye. After that Ireland was born; myth holds, that the island of Ireland was once populated by demonic beings known as the Fomorii, and spiritual beings known as the Bahn Sidhe ("Banshee"). The Fomorii, and the Bahn Sidhe, were defeated by Irish warriors, in the movie "Hellboy 2" the so called war between fairies and man? That is taken straight out of Irish myth; the battle depicted at the begining of the movie is indeed an Irish legend, only the warriors in question are all Irish, not "mankind." Ireland is a peaceful island now, or it was at least for a time, because the Fomorii and the Bahn Sidhe were driven into the sea. So the myth says.

Absolutely nothing to do with China, however, still pointing out the fact to establish some degree of relevancy, that most wrestling styles in fact date to prehistoric times, in whatever country they exist. Even in the oldest Abrahamic tradition, Judaism, specifically speaking Hebrew apocryphal literature (not cannonical religious literature) it is stated, that with that whole Cain and Abel thing? Cain challenged Abel to a wrestling match, as Cain felt he was the better man, the better brother the better son of Adam, the two men wrestled, and because pre-flood era men were much stronger physically, Hebrew legend holds that the wrestling match went on for days, literally days, around the clock. In the end, Abel won, actually, and told his brother to just accept God's judgment regarding the sacrifice. Now more incensed than ever, twice humiliated, the moment Abel turned his back, Cain struck the back of his head with a stone, killing his brother. In case you happen to be a Christian by chance, I thought you might find the story interesting; believe it or not, at least from a Hebrew apocryphal perspective, Abel is hardly the "wimp" portrayed in the Bible, he actually beat his brother in a wrestling contest.

You know that Klingon story regarding Kahless wrestling his brother, in Star Trek fiction? That story is borrowed, directly, from Hebrew apocryphal literature; Hebrew tradition holds, that in addition to the sacrifice humiliation, Abel humiliated his brother yet again, in a wrestling match, that is where the whole "Kahles wrestling so and so" comes from.

Just letting you know, grappling, goes much deeper the world over than you realize; you can't set a date as when any given grappling style started.

Who invented Kung-Fu?

First, to clarify, the modern "Kung Fu" (an term for all Chinese martial arts) began in the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD-1644 AD); and Chinese historical writings regard Equitation (skill with horses) and Archery as "Kung Fu". Chinese historians believe that "Kung Fu" began as tools for survival such as hunting and war with different tribes. The earliest mention of a distinct style of hand-to-hand combat was around 2700 B.C. where a fighting technique called "Jiao Li" (角力), where the practitioner uses horned helmets to gore enemies to death. "Jiao Li" was a grappling form with strikes, blocks, and joint locks later added to it to form "Shuai Jiao" (摔跤), which is translated into Chinese Wrestling. "Jiao Li" was developed during the Zhou Dynasty (1045 BC-256 BC), and became an official part of the Zhou military training program. "Shuai Jiao" was used by the Qin army and became a sport under the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206BC). During the "Spring and Autumn Period" (770 BC-746 BC), swordsmanship became wide spread, many of Confucius's students were described to be skilled swordsman. During this time period, punching techniques, called Boxing in modern terms, also improved a great deal. During the Qin Dynasty, as mentioned before, strikes, blocks, and joint locks were added to "Jiao Li" to form "Shuai Jiao". Immediately after the Qin Dynasty, during the Han Dynasty (206 BC- 220 AD) many "Kung Fu" manuals were written, describing hand-to-hand unarmed combat techniques of the time, showing a vast increment of techniques from before the Han Dynasty. Toward the Han Dynasty, passages from books describe methods for an unarmed combatant to disarm an armed opponent. These records show that the basis for Chinese "Boxing" and its philosophy: <Far use feet to kick, Close use hand to punch, Next to body use joint locks and throws>. Han Dynasty also saw rise to weapons "Kung Fu", where sword, dao (saber), dagger-axe, and sword-shield combination techniques. What are the differences between martial art styles?

IMHO, the primary distinction is between internal & external styles. The three main internal styles are Tai Chi, Bagua and Hsing-I. These focus on the cultivation, development, retention and discharge of chi. There is a strong emphasis on the use of tendons, ligaments & joints in power delivery. On the other hand, many external styles emphasize muscles in power delivery. It is very possible in the internal arts to deliver a very short-range attack without chambering your arm using internal energy. Many external arts require chambering of the arm to deliver power over a certain distance.
