Sports promoted fitness and stamina and a desire to achieve greatness, and so were of social benefit. They were held in Greek cities as a part of religious festivals to honour the gods. Some were much more widely attended than others, gaining inter-city repute throughout the Greek world, and came to deliver financial and prestige benefits. The most prominent were the Olympic Games at Olympia in honour of Zeus, others were the Isthmian Games, Nemean Games, Pythian Games.

Ancient Greeks loved sport and most cities because they could run around naked in Ancient Greece had public gymnasiums where people gathered to train and relax. The Greeks believed that a healthy body was very important. Most men and boys practised sports every day because they enjoyed them and wanted to keep fit. Sport was a good preparation for war too. The Greek armies had to be fit enough to march long distances, carrying all their heavy equipment, and then begin the fight with the enemy.

I believe the Greeks embraced the abilities of man and aspired to the abilities of gods. The challenge and breaking or building a man brought them closer as a people to their beliefs in supreme beings--as if proof of being a worthy people.

Sport was important to them because they believed that it built character and gave them a healthy body as someone else has stated above!!
