In Ancient Greece, warfare generally ceased during the times in which the Olympic games were held (and during similar athletic contests elsewhere in Greece) due to their religious significance. Formal athletic contests like the Olympics were, for ancient Greeks, divine gifts of some kind. The gods were thought to enjoy the games; the games were considered to be an offering to the gods. Thus, to engage in warfare during these times would be to commit an offense against the gods -- and to run the risk of divine punishment as a result.
