The story goes that two friends (somewhere in England) were on their way to play football. One asked the other, "what are you playing?", to which he replied "rugger", short for Rugby football. The second friend asked the first the same question; he replied "soccer", short for association football.
That's the story anyway. Probably not 100% true, but it's the best explanation I've heard...
the name "soccer" is not the real name it is football. Football is because you use your foot. duhhhh!
Soccer and football is the same sport witha different name, it is called football in the uk and soccer in the u.s.
American football evolved from rugby, soccer and other sports that were, at the time, all called "football." American football simply never obtained another name (as opposed to rugby and soccer) in the country that created it.
Football
The name of the soccer game was football.
Association Football was the first name of football as it was estbalished by the Football Association of England. Soccer is derived from Asocc or Socca, some deviations from the original word.
English football in America is called Soccer or American football in England is like rugby =)
It depends on what you mean by soccer vs football. If you are referring to the beautiful game. Most countries and territories call it football or something similar to the name. However, some countries say soccer(Association Football) because they have other sports or versions of football, such as American Football, Canadian Football, Australian Football, Gaelic Football and Rugby Football.
In the USA you have American football and soccer.
Association Football
Footy or soccer.
Association Football.
