The game of Basketball was invented in 1891 in Springield, Massachusetts, USA by James Naismith, a physical education instructor from Canada. Naismith was a physical education instructor at the YMCA training school in Springfield, which later became Springfield College. Naismith was looking for a way to bring fun and exercise indoors for young men during the long New England winters. He used peach baskets and soccer balls and a new game was born. Springfield is now the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
