Seriously why are you asking this question? It is "so long" because the people who started the Iditarod used it to transport medicine to the really sick people and it became a race because it was for fun and it got longer after the years. SO BASICALLY THEY WANTED THE MUSHERS TO TRY HARDER

Whats interesting about the Iditarod is that its a 1,500 mile long race across Alaska that lasts a long time.
