The cue ball can be a different weight or size from the others. If this is the case, the cue ball will be difficult to control for the way it acts after hitting object balls.

Some tables use a laser and sensor to "read" the ball coming down the chute, and will force the cue ball to take a different route. I believe some others use a magnetic cue ball, or at least there may be a piece of metal in the cue ball and a magnet in the ball return system to somehow differentiate them.

Are billiard balls different to snooker balls?

The correct answer is "maybe". The original game of billiards refers to English Billiards and this is nothing like pool. English billiards uses balls that are 52.5mm (2-1/16 inches) in diameter. The Carom Billiards games, such as Three Cushion, is also nothing like pool. Carom billiard games use balls that are 61.5mm (2-7/16 inches) in diameter. Both English and carom billiard ball sets use 3 balls: a white one, a red one, and another white one with a spot on it (sometimes substituted with a yellow ball). However, the term billiards today nearly always refers to the Pocket Billiards games, most likely 9 Ball or 8 Ball. These are also referred to as pool games and all use the same balls. These balls are 57.15mm (2-1/4 inches) in diameter. There are 15 numbered balls and a white cue ball in a typical set.

What are the differences between pool and billiards?

The terms pool and billiards may or may not refer to the same game. Pocket billiards is usually referred to as pool, and covers many different games, the most common being straight pool, 8 ball, and 9 ball. English Billiards is never referred to as pool, and uses only 3 balls. Snooker is never referred to as pool or billiards, but is a form of billiards, and uses special table markings and 22 balls.
