Some players are called up from the Minor Leagues and some have their contracts purchased from the Minor Leagues because it's to differentiate between whether they're currently on a team's 4o-man roster or not. If a Major League team calls up a player then they're on a 4o-man roster however if a Major League team purchases a player's contract from 1 of their Minor League teams then they're calling the player up to the Majors but they're also adding him to their 40-man roster as well.
