In the 2012 Olympics Usain Bolt won the 100 Meter with a time of 9.6, a new Olympic record.
The men's 100 meter world champion for 1980 swimming was in fact in the stroke butterfly. It was won by Tom Daniels from Perth. His speed was fantastic but his stroke wasn't the best. His time was 57.97s. His competitors (MICHAEL PHELPS) had a time of 58.13s.

The mile run is not an event at the Olympics. The 1500 meter run is the closest event to a mile that is run at the Olympics. The 2004 gold medal winner of the 1500 was Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in a time of 3:34.18.
1956 Summer Games in Melbourne and 1960 Summer Games in Rome. She won bronze in 4x100 meter relay in 1956 and won gold in 4x100 meter relay, 100 meter dash, and 200 meter dash in 1960.
