If the term "Baseball" is accepted to mean the game in a form recognizable as the game played today, the first baseball game was played in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1845. The game was basically an amateur one for twenty years or so when the Cincinati Red Stockings declared themselves the first openly professional team.The first professional league, the National Association, began play in May ( I believe)of 1871.

Because there are an odd number of teams, there will always be one team from each league that will have to play outside their league.
