The Raven first backup QB was Eric Zeier. Zeier, along with Ravens starter Vinny Testaverde, were both original Browns who moved with Art Modell when he relocated the franchise to Baltimore in 1996.
He played through the 1998 season.
The Ravens' 2008 season began with a 3-way battle for the QB position between incumbent Kyle Boller, backup Troy Smith, and newly drafted Rookie Joe Flacco. During the pre-season, Boller went down with a season-ending injury, and Troy Smith benched by illness. The starting job fell to Flacco, and he has remained the Ravens starting QB ever since.
Flacco was brought in as the 18th pick in the first round of the 2008 season. He replaced as starting QB after starting QB Kyle Boller was injured, and backup QB Troy Smith was sidelined due to illness. As a result, Flacco started all 16 games of that season, and led the Ravens to the AFC Championship game in January, 2009 against the Steelers. He is the only QB in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs in his rookie season and win 2 playoff games. For his efforts in the 2008 season and the playoffs, he was award NFL Rookie of the Year honors.
