One of Rome's Christian emperors banned the Olympic Games, which had originally been held in honor of the gods who dwelled on Mount Olympus.
It depends on what time period you are looking at. Modern (summer) Olympics are held every four years around the world - for example, in 2008, it was in Beijing, China, and in 2012, it will be London, England. However, the original Olympic games were held in Athens, Greece, in honor of one of the Greek gods, Zeus. P.S. The 2004 Olympic games were held in Athens, Greece!
Plays were played in honour of all the gods, not just one specifically. the god Hermes liked plays the best *Improve answer note: The first Greek plays in Athens were held to honor the god of fertility and wine, Dionysus. (right out of my textbook)
well there isn't just one olympic god there are actually 12 or even more
The Olympians as they were known were the twelve Gods and Goddesses associated with the Olympics. They were:Aphrodite the Goddess of loveApollo the God of the SunAres the God of WarArtemis the Goddess of the MoonAthena the Goddess of WisdomDemeter the Goddess of FertilityDionysus the God of TheatreHephaestos the God of FireHera the Goddess of Marriage (wife of Zeus)Hermes the messenger GodPoseidon the God of the SeaZeus the God of the Sky and Ruler of Olympia. The Olympics were a reference to them as they were a test of peoples' outstanding strength, speed, skill, and other "olympic" abilities. One difference between the ancient and modern Olympic Games is that the ancient games were played within the context of a religious festival. The Games were held in honor of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, and a sacrifice of 100 oxen was made to the god on the middle day of the festival. Athletes prayed to the gods for victory, and made gifts of animals, produce, or small cakes, in thanks for their successes. In Athens there was an annual Zeus festival, with large burnt offerings.
Greece Established The First Olympic Games In 776 B.C. In Honor Of One Of Their Gods, Zeus. The First Olympic Games Were Held In Olympia, Greece, Not Mount Olympus (As Some People Are Saying....)
The ancient Greece wanted to appeal the gods. Not the all the gods{well, yeah!!!!!} But, the games were actually appealed to only one god and that god was Zuse and he was a powerful and potent god! He was the worshipping of them all! A very potent god and very powerful!
