There have been 6 black players play for the New York Rangers On Dec. 23 1998 Rumun Ndur became the first black player to play in an NHL game for the Rangers. Art Dorrington became the first black player to sign a contract with an NHL team when he signed with the Rangers in 1950 but never made it to the NHL. The other 5 black players in order of first appearance are: Jason Doig, Sandy McCarthy (yes he's black), Anson Carter, Kevin Weekes and Nigel Dawes
Fred Sasakamoose was the first First Nations (Canadian equivalent to "Native American") NHL player. He played 11 games for the Chicago Black Hawks in 1953-54. He is now an elder of the Ahtahkapoop Cree Nation and a senator of the First Nations Government.
