New Zealand's first individual gold medal was won in 1928. Boxer Ted Morgan won gold in the welterweight class at the Amsterdam Olympics. Morgan took first prize as a virtual unknown and fought under the handicap of a dislocated little finger.

New Zealand sent its own team for the first time to Antwerp in 1920 and Darcy Hadfield won a Bronze medal in the Single Sculls. New Zealand's first Gold Medal for a New Zealand team was won in Amsterdam in 1928 by welterweight boxer, Ted Morgan.

That was Malcolm Champion who swam as part of the 1912 gold medal winning 4x200 meter freestyle relay team for the Olympic team that was known as Australasia. Australasia was a team that competed in the 1908 and 1912 Games that was comprised of Australian and New Zealand athletes.
