As of 2011, Robinson Cano is number 24 on the Yankees. Robinson, named after Jackie Robinson, wears number 24 in honor of Jackie. Cano could not get number 42 which was Jackie Robinsons number, so he reversed the number.
The number 42 was worn by Jackie Robinson and is retired throughout major league baseball. Only older players, such as Mariano Rivera on the Yankees still wear the number 42 since they wore it before it was retired. This year however for some reason all blue jays are wearing the number 42... I would like to know why :S
