William Webb Ellis was playing football (soccer) for Rugby school and during the match he caught the ball in his arms (which was allowed at the time) and ran with it (which was not) the other players ran after him, trying to tackle him and the crowd loved it, later it became a sport. this is supposed to have happened in the latter half of 1823.
