Its called short-stop
It doesn't go by base-for force plays, you only have to touch the base. You tag the player on a steal, or when nobody is behind the player.
Occasionally a rover ( short outfielder ) may play there, but normally no fielder is there.
That is the baseball or softball fielding position between second and third base.

Saying the 'bag' in softball is referencing the base. It could be any of the bases (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or Home). "He never touched the bag" would mean the player never touched the base.
