Most often you'll get a response of Babe Ruth especially by the stat prone;informed Baseball people know Roberto Clemente is the best all around athlete to play that position in the 'modern era'. There's simply not enough profit$$$ in promoting Clemente and until Latinos become the 'money demographic' (don't hold your breath) you'll continue to get Ruthian exaltation

The best fielder for every position in each league is awarded the Gold Glove award. This is voted on by players, coaches, managers, and media. This would be a good judge of "who is the best fielder" any other answer on here woudl be a personal opinion, more then likely based on the team the person likes.
There are nine players out on the field at one time. Although the pitcher and catcher have the ball the most each person has a specific job. In the infield there is the pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, shortstop, and third base. In the outfield there is left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder. In slow pitch softball there is an extra fielder, who is specified as a rover. Normally, the defensive team will play with four outfielders, meaning there is a left fielder, left-center fielder, right-center fielder, and right fielder.
