The England and Wales Cricket Board.Twenty20 was originally introduced in 2003 by the ECB for inter-county competition. The primary motivation was to produce a shorter match of a length of time more consistent with other sports, making it more appealing for people who don't with to dedicate a day to watching longer forms of cricket. The concept proved very successful as the format has spread internationally to the extent there is even a world tournament for the format.
