Nobody knows for sure. Both are ancient games, particularly Hurling. There are references to Hurling as far back as 1272 BC. References to Gaelic football go back as far as 1308 AD. Like any sport they have both developed over time. In 1884 the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded and the rules of both sports were formalised. Prior to that, there were different rules in different parts of the country.

The Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in 1884 to counter the decline in popularity of several traditional Irish sports including Hurling and Gaelic Football. However the individual sports themselves are considerably older. Hurling is the oldest with origins dating back over 3,000 years. Modern Gaelic Football was only formalised in 1887 but its informal predecessor Caid is at least 700 years old.
