As of January 1, 1988 the world record for the women's 100 meter dash was held by Evelyn Ashford of the United States at a time of 10.76 seconds. Florence Griffith-Joyner broke the women's world record in the 100 meters on July 16, 1988 with a time of 10.61 seconds at the United States Olympic trials. The following day (July 17, 1988) she again broke the world record with a time of 10.49 seconds. This record has not been broken since.
