The Kansas City Monarchs, in 1945. Prior to that, Robinson played baseball at Pasadena Junior College before moving on to UCLA. He withdrew from UCLA to help his mother care for the family, and in 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he stayed until receiving a medical discharge in 1945. That summer, he played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League, and on October 23, 1945 he and John Wright, also African-American, signed contracts to play for the Montreal Royals, a minor league team affiliated with the Brooklyn Dodgers. After leading that league in batting average during the 1946 season, he was brought up to play for the major league's Brooklyn Dodgers for 1947, where he played through 1956.
