ice hockey
the international rules
The game of ice hockey probably evolved from the game of field hockey that was played in Northern Europe for hundreds of years. The modern version of ice-hockey finds its origins in the rules laid down by a Canadian named J G Creighton. His rules were implemented in the first game of ice hockey played in Montreal, Canada in the year 1875.
Hockey's rules were created by it's creator, but over time, we changed to rules to our liking.
Hockey was historically not played on ice until around the invention of modern ice hockey. This was well after the creation of modern field hockey, which itself derived from earlier variations. In short: field hockey was first.
The history of a hockey puck... The origin of ice hockey is unknown, however, ice hockey probaly evolved from the game of field hockey that has been played in Northern Europe for centuries. The rules of modern ice hockey were devised by Canadian J G A Creighton. In 1875, the first game of ice hockey with Creighton's rules was played in Montreal, Canada. Today, Ice hockey is an Olympic sport and the most popular team sport played on ice. Ice hockey is played with two opposing teams wearing ice skates. Unless there is a penalty, each team only has six players on the ice rink at a time. The aim of the game is to knock the hockey puck into the opposing team's net. The net is guarded by a special player called the goalie. The first artificial ice rink (mechanically-refrigerated) was built in 1876, at Chelsea, London, England and was named the Glaciarium. Off-ice hockey, also known as floor hockey, follows similar rules to ice hockey but is played on a flat surface like a gym floor. Players use sticks to move a puck and score goals. The game typically follows the same basic rules and regulations as ice hockey, with some modifications to accommodate the different playing surface.
Too many new rules.

"Hockey" is a broad term assigned to a plethora of different sports (Ice, Field, Roller, etc.) Games similar to what we today call hockey were found in Egyptian stone carvings dating from before 1272BC. As such it is impossible to say who was the founder of hockey. The founders of the modern game of field hockey are the inaugural members of the Teddington Hockey Club founded in 1871 who introduced certain standards and rules of play.
