That's a tough question to answer because there is really no 'average MLB pitcher' stats. Some pitchers, like the starter, might pitch 6 or 7 innings in a game while a reliever may come in and only pitch to 1 batter. The chances are that the average starter will have more strikeouts than the average reliever. However, it is pretty easy to say how many strikeouts are in the average MLB game. In the National League for 2009, there were 1295 games played and 18205 strikeouts recorded. This averages out to 14 strikeouts per National League game. In the American League for 2009, there were 1135 games played and 15386 strikeouts recorded. This averages out to 13.6 strikeouts per American League game.
Through the 2008 season, that is Lefty Gomez who led the American League in ERA (2.37), strikeouts (194), and wins (21) in 1937.
In a minor league game, Ron Necciai struckout 27 batters in a game for the Bristol Twins of the Appalachian League in 1952. In a major league game, Tom Cheney struckout 21 batters in a 16 inning complete game for the Washington Senators in 1962. Kerry Wood, Randy Johnson, and Roger Clemens hold the nine inning major league record with 20 strikeouts in a game.
The 2003 Chicagoe Cubs pitching staff had 1,404 strikeouts for the Major League record.
The stats used to determine the Triple Crown of Pitching are wins, strikeouts, and earned run average or ERA. The first American League pitcher to win the Triple Crown of Pitching was Cy Young in 1901. The first pitcher to win it in the National League was Tommy Bond in 1877.
