The NCAA Tournament and The NIT tournament
Mens college basketball is astronomically more popular than the womens. Not even women watch the womens version. An example of how much more popular it is. The Ncaa Final Four are officially called the Men's tournament and women's tournament. However the men's version is referred to as "Te Tournament" and the women's as, "The Woman's Tournament."
The first and most well known major basketball tournament is the NBA Playoffs. In college, it is a 64 team tournament known as March Madness. There is also a tournament every four years in the Olympic Games. There is also the NIT tournament in college, and FIBA Tournament in international play.

I don't believe our legislature has ever designated an official state sport, but Kansas University is usually a contender in the NCAA basketball tournament and is fairly good in football. Kansas State is better in football, and usually not far behind in basketball. Wichita State is often in the national collegiate bowling tournament and a contender for their conference basketball championship. Fort Hays usually fields a decent team in Division 4 basketball and has won the national title in football. Hutchinson Community College hosts the annual NJCAA basketball tournament and is often one of the competitors in it.
Teams that are on the verge of being in or out of the NCAA tournament.
