Have you ever seen Balto? Dog sled racing started between people delivering stuff, then involved between who could take the package from point A to point B the fastest, just like how FedEx and UPS try to be the fastest, if you have a fast team you can get hired more. To sum it up, it started as a competition between delivering companies, who was the fastest, that's what they sought out.
