James Naismith was a soccer coach and he wanted to develop an indoor exercise that would keep his team in shape during the off season. So he nailed up wooden fruit baskets on the walls and had his team run around throwing the soccer balls into the fruit baskets. He eventually developed this into Basketball as we know it today. Centuries ago, the Aztecs of Mexico are supposed to have had a basketball-like game, where the two teams tried to kick or throw a heavy rubber ball through an elevated hole in the wall, but we don't consider this to be related to modern basketball. The losing team was made into human sacrifices; that was their version of 'sudden death overtime'
