2010, the time before that was 1978, as of 2022 it has still not been repaved
It was built as a political favor by William H.G. France to Alabama Governor George Wallace and as a speedway to both expand the empire of International Speedway Corporation and also to serve as an alternate to Daytona Int'l Speedway, which at the time was becoming a source of controversy in Daytona Beach because of tax deals made to the speedway when it was built that some local politicians in Daytona wanted to change - France Sr. wanted a speedway to hold races in case he felt the need to close down Daytona.
Daytona Motor Speedway, but at that time the track was on the beach and was 3 miles long, 1.5 of the miles were on a national highway (the highway was roped off).
Greyhound or taxi. Greyhound standard fare from Orlando to Daytona is $20, travel time - 1 hour. The only problem is that you will have to use a taxi from your hotel/resort or home to Greyhound station in Orlando and from Greyhound station to Speedway in Daytona. I strongly recommend to use a taxi and make sure too book your transfer in advance. The earlier you book the lower rate you get... I would recommend Star Trans transportation company (link below). I know they provide transportation to Daytona Speedway for Daytona 500 race. Or you can also use Mears.
The first Daytona 500 was on Febuary 22, 1959. And NASCAR has been established before the start of the Daytona 500, so the answer your question...no. No, it was not. For example, for most of the time that NASCAR raced there, the now gone, Riverside International Raceway (CA), a road course was the first race of the season. There was no "Daytona 500" until the speedway was built in 1959. Even before that, the races on the beach at Daytona were not the first race of the season.
Jeff Gordon's last Busch Series win was on November 11, 2000 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It was the last race in the Busch Series that Jeff competed in.
On July 2, 2010, Dale Jr. won the Subway Jalapeno 250 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway. It was the first time Junior drove the Wrangler car in honor of his father.
The 2011 Daytona 500 will be televised on channel 5 (FOX).
Jeff Gordon's last race in the Busch Series (now known as the Nationwide Series) was on November 11, 2000 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Jeff won the race.
Jeff Gordon last won on September 6, 2010 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Having gone last year for the first time I would say to expect one of the most incredible experience ever BUT you must put aside the fact that there will be huge crowds and souvenirs/foods is overprice. I can honestly say that I had a tear came to my eye when I first stepped into the speedway, it is indescribable the feeling you get when you first step into that storied speedway. The sheer size blew me away, television simply does not do it justice. I still get goose bumps thinking about it. Seeing that race is something everyone should do once even if they aren
