In the 1600s, many boys and girls in primary schools forged the idea of the most primitive form of "yearbook" when they filled blank pages with personal notes and clippings of writing from their peers.

In 1806, the first "college yearbook" was created by Yale and it was called "Profiles of Part of the Class Graduated at Yale College" and it resembled more of a photo album than a modern yearbook.

In 1845 the first High School yearbook was published at Waterville High School in New York State and it was called "The Evergreen". This is thought to be the earliest thing close to modern yearbooks.By 1880, more sophisticated printing press systems make creating mass-produced books, including year books, easier and more accessible; despite this, college/high school yearbooks were still usually only granted to seniors or those in older grade generations.

In the 1920s, yearbooks began to be sold to students at the profit of the schools and then include activities and teachers. They're also less commonly restricted to seniors.

In the 1930s, offset printing is invented so photos and design elements are included. Additionally, printing companies begin to solicit money from schools to create custom yearbooks. Most yearbooks are sold for around $6.

During the 1940s-70s, designs become more intricate and students have a larger role in the creation of yearbooks.

In the 1980s, yearbooks are not merely dedicated to important figures at school and expand their auxillary scope to people outside of "the in crowd". At this point, people began experimenting with video yearbooks, but they had little success.

In 1986, yearbooks made their final push into extreme popularity at nearly every school across America and much of Europe. Computers and desktop publishing made it easier to produce nice yearbooks quickly. By this time, it is extremely rare for a school to not publish an annual yearbook.

By the early 2000s, all yearbooks minimally include the primary components of modern yearbooks: photos, class pictures, sports/activities, interesting happenings, quotes, etc. Closer to our modern time, digital yearbooks have become more often. They are available on disks or flashdrives or even downloadable for the internet

I APOLOGIZE FOR THE INTENSELY COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF YEARBOOKS THAT MAY BE DULL. I GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY. BUT, WHATEVER.
