Manchester United were first formed as a works team in 1878 by the dining committee of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway as the "Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Cricket and Football club". The name of the football team was usually shortened to "Newton Heath L.Y.R.". In 1892 the team broke away from the railway and became "Newton Heath Football Club". In 1902 the club changed their name to "Manchester United Football Club". Contrary to popular belief the club did not go bankrupt and reform under a new name although they did go into administration and were issued with a winding up order before a certain J.H. Davies stepped in and saved the club from folding. The two main reasons for the name change to Manchester United F.C. was that Newton Heath F.C. now played their home games at their new ground along Bank Street in the neighbouring Manchester town of Clayton. The clubs Board also wanted to give the club wider appeal within the City of Manchester. The clubs name was shortened to "Manchester United" in 1997 by the then Director Peter Kenyon because he though the change would give the club more marketing appeal in countries who prefer to call 'Association Football' by the alternative name 'Soccer'.
