The University of Southern Mississippi was voted by the UPI as national champions in football in both 1958 and 1962 in what was then know as the"Small College Division." USM was called Mississippi Southern College at the time of its national championships.

No, Mississippi State has never won a national championship. Some Bulldog fans believe the 1940 team should be recognized as "national champions" for a 10-0-1 season, including a victory of Georgetown in the Orange Bowl. In reality, the Bulldogs finished at no. 9 in major polls that year.
