No one set par at, nor is 72 always par. There are 18 holes on a Golf course, the holes are of pars 3,4 and 5, any combination of these is acceptable and the total is par. Par can range from 69-73.

What and how much is a par in golf?

Par is set by the course designer and will yake into account the length of the hole and potential difficulty. Usually a par 72 course will have 2-4 par five hole and the same number of par 3 holes. All other will be par 4. This is a classic or historical course design.

When less than one percent of all golfers in the world ever break 100 why is it that par for most golf courses in the world is set at 72?

I'm afraid that is way off, I would say 1% of golfers fail to break 100 at one point in their life would be more accurate than the above stat. Par is set at 72 for most courses because there is 18 holes, either par 3, mostly par 4's and some par 5's, the total they add up to is 72 (some courses vary from 69-73). If par was 100 top pros would be maybe 125 under for a tournament which is just silly. The problem you have pointed out is solved by the handicap system, which allows golfers to shoot net under par.

What is par in golfing?

When golfing, each hole has a par, and every course (18 holes) has a par. Par is the average number of strokes that a person should be able to take while completing a round of golf. If a hole has a par of 4, it should take the golfer 4 strokes to get the ball in the whole. If a course has a par of 72, it should take the golfer 72 strokes to get the ball into 18 holes.

How many pars in a 18 hole golf course?

Each hole and every course has its own predetermined par. Par is the standard number of strokes set for each hole or for the entire course. there are 4 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 4 par 5's There are always 18 pars on an 18 hole golf course. Par is considered to be the score an expert should require to finish a particular hole. now, perhaps the above (4 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 4 par 5's) is true on a "standard" or regulation (par 72) course. But there are also courses that are par 69, 70, 71, 73 and so on. These will obviously not follow the standard breakdown. Then also consider "executive" courses, consisting of only par 3's and par 4's. These are often par 58 but again, these can vary as well.
