Michael Jordan has gone back twice in his career. First, he retired in 1993 after hearing about his father's death in South Carolina, then came out of retirement in 1998 and played for the Chicago Bulls until 2000. He then retired again, and came out of retirement again in 2001 and joined the Washington Wizards, who were formed the year he came out of retirement for the first time. He played for the Washington Wizards for 2 years (2001-2003), then retired from basketball for good (at least I think...!)
Michael Jordan once retired in 1993 because of citing a loss of desire to play the game and he later stated the murder of his Father Michael Jordan Sr. earlier in the year shaped his decision. But in 1995 Michael Jordan went back in the league. In 1999 with Phil Jackson's contract expiring, and the pending departure of Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman looming, and being in the latter stages of an owner- induced of lockout player, Jordan retired for the second time. In 2000 Jordan went back in the NBA not as a player but as the part owner and Presidentials of Basketball Operations of the Washington Wizards. In 2001 Michael Jordan announced for his professional play with the Wizards. And in 2003 Jordan announce his third retirement and that was his last retirement.
When he first came into the NBA he was 22.

Michael Jordan idolized his brother. He thought he had half his skills. His brother wore 45. Half of that is 22.5. Round that off and that's 23. When Jordan came back to the Bulls after his first retirement, he briefly wore the number 45 before going back to #23 in the 1996-97 season.Michael Jordan idolized his older brother Larry who wore 45. Michael wanted to be half the man Larry was so divided 45 by 2 and rounded it up to 23.See the Related Links for an interesting article on the matter.
