In 1928 Japan won it's first gold medal. It does vary for Japan's most (gold) medals in that Olympic sport. It could be in the winter or summer olympics. Personally I think they would have more ping pong medals.
In the Summer Olympics, Japan has won the most medals in gymnastics (92) and the most gold medals in judo (35). Swimming and wrestling are also sports that Japan has done very well at. In the Winter Olympics, Japan has won the most medals in speed skating (12) and the most gold medals (3) in ski jumping.
