In the pairs event, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia won the gold medal over Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada, despite the fact that many believed the Canadians had performed better. Later, it was revealed that the French judge, Marie Reine LeGougne, had been pressured by her federation's president to vote in favor of the Russian pair in exchange for a vote for the French ice dance team of Anissina and Peizzerat (who later won the gold medal in ice dancing). Because of the scandal, a second set of gold medals was awarded to Sale and Pelletier, and in 2003, a new scoring system was instituted in figure skating in an attempt to prevent future scandals of this kind.
