Why would a scuba diver go underwater?
Becasue if a SCUBA diver didn't go underwater, they really wouldn't be a SCUBA diver. SCUBA stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

Currents have a disproportionately greater effect when pushing water against a scuba diver than wind does when pushing air against a person above the surface. This is for two reasons: firstly, water is much more dense; secondly, a diver swimming has less propulsion than a person walking (ie. you can walk faster and with less effort than you can swim). I am not aware of any scientific formulae comparing the two, but I would compare swimming into a two knot current wearing scuba gear as the rough equivalent to trying to walk into a windspeed of approximately 30 knots.

Scuba diver or open water course which would you be better doing?
The name Open Water course is pretty much standardized in the industry for the beginning level course. But there are still some "lower level" courses (sometimes called a Scuba Diver course) in addition to the Open Water course. Just see which one give you more dives. You should get 4 to 5 scuba dives in your course with a possible skin dive which is often optional, but in general the Open Water course is considered the better and more complete course.
How far can somebody be underwater before the pressue kills them?
The record depth for a scuba diver is 313 meters. That is probably about the limit before pressure changes when surfacing would prove fatal. A diver could probably go deeper without being killed but wouldn't get to the surface again alive.
