Soccer and hockey are probably the biggest sports in Russia, I'm not sure if they play rugby also, but it's quite possible.
It is believed hockey possibly started in Russia. Otherwise, there are no other major sports that came from Russia.
It would be play, as the sentence would read for example, 'Do you play different sports?','Pintsinker has played many different sports in his lifetime', or even 'Pintsinker is hopeless at playing different sports'.
In the Champions League, obviously the biggest game from Russia's perspective is the Group B clash between CSKA and Manchester United at Old Trafford.
