In the earliest Olympics, the Greek athletes competed for prizes such as tax breaks, huge monetary prizes, and crowns of olive branches. Most of the rewards received in the past are the ancient equivalent of today's medals and bouquet of flowers.
The Ancient Greeks started this competition for their belief to in the glory in competition and to honour their Gods with their ability. The Olympics were much more than a game, they gave competitors a chance at immortality. Champions were seen as heroes and were given something special: Honour. This was a higher value to the Ancient Greeks than money or prizes. The Ancient Greek Olympics merged two things that the Greeks held sacred, religion and the desire for greatness.
