Best Answer

The Ancient Greeks started this competition for their belief to in the glory in competition and to honour their Gods with their ability. The Olympics were much more than a game, they gave competitors a chance at immortality. Champions were seen as heroes and were given something special: Honour. This was a higher value to the Ancient Greeks than money or prizes. The Ancient Greek Olympics merged two things that the Greeks held sacred, religion and the desire for greatness.
