You have to watch the pitcher, try to figure out what his speed is, what kind of pitches he throws, all that stuff. Now when you actually get to the plate, this is what I like to do. 1. Measure off the end of the plate with the edge of your barrel, and shuffle back a tiny bit. This is to make sure you know you can reach the outside corner. 2. Check your guns. What this means is make sure you are holding the bat correctly. When you grip the bat, make sure that your door-knocking knuckles line up. If you are not sure, point your 2 pointer fingers out. They should be parallel to one another, not perpendicular. 3. Take some check swings. I like to take 2, one looking at the pitcher's cap, then the other looking at his shoulders. This gets your eyes set and focused on the target. 4. When the pitcher goes into his windup, get set. 5. When he brings his leg up, load yourself, meaning get in whatever stance you use when you hit. 6. When he releases the baseball, step forward. Don't step forward too much, as this will cause you to lean forward and swing wildly. It should just be a simple step forward with your front foot. 7. Keep your eye on the ball at all times. 8. Swing.
