It depends. For instance, a person could be competing in a Team event where they play their own ball, but only the low score on the team is used for the team score. That does not preclude the persons individual score to be used to calculate an individual result. What is not allowed is for a person to compete in a match play competition and a stroke play competition simultaneously because the rules that govern these different types of events are different. For instance, Rule 27 covers Ball Lost or Out of Bounds. The rule requires that a player must play a ball under penalty of one stroke as near as possible to the spot where the original ball is played. If the player breaches this rule, the penalty in match play is loss of hole, but the penalty in stroke play is two strokes.
