Four players shared the previous NFL record (63 yards): Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints in 1970; Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos in 1998; Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders in 2011; and David Akers of the San Francisco 49ers in 2012.
Both Elam and Janikowski tied the record in Denver. Elam's kick was in Mile High Stadium; Janikowski's was in Sports Authority Field at Mile High (formerly Invesco Field). Dempsey's field goal against the Detroit Lions at Tulane Stadium was a game winner. Akers' kick was against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
Elam, Janikowski and Akers kicked their field goals at the end of the first half. Dempsey's kick gave the Saints a 19-17 victory over the Lions with two seconds left in the game.
