Torino's Olympic Village The Torino Olympic Village includes the residential buildings and services dedicated to the athletes that will compete in the Piemonte capital, as well as the official delegations. Location The Torino Olympic Village is located in an area adjacent to Lingotto, connected by a footbridge to the Torino 2006 headquarters where the International Broadcasting Centre and the Main Press Centre will be situated. At the centre of the complex is the restored historic building of the Mercati Generali (General Markets) that dates back to 1934. Technical data The Torino Olympic Village can house up to 2,500 athletes in an area of over one hundred thousand square metres. Description of the venue There is a services area within the Olympic Village, which includes the logistics centre, shopping centre, relaxation lounge for the athletes and staff and a gymnasium. There will also be an ample parking area for the residents. Also an accreditation centre, a 1,500 square metre shopping centre, two large restaurants on two floors, one for the athletes and assistants and one for staff and volunteers a medical centre and massage centre, and an area reserved to personnel. The Village was designed following bio-architectural methods: photovoltaic cells and panels, a district heating network and air solar systems for ventilation. A 60% saving is expected on the energy consumed and pollutants emitted. After the Olympics it will become the city's property: some of it will be used for housing and other parts will be used for research and high-tech services.
