Generally, the NFL requires officials to have a wealth of experience to join the league. Officials are usually required to have a minimum of 10 seasons officiating NCAA Division I football, with a minimum of five years on a conference staff. But to get to the Division I level, most officials must spend a minimum of 10 to 15 years in high school football before moving to the junior college or small college (Divisions II and III) levels. If an officials aspires to be a referee (i.e. the "white hat"), he must have experience as a referee in college. Before becoming an NFL referee, an official must have 3-4 years experience at another position.
