This depends on the type of sport and to what extent maximal strength is required as a part of the sport.

Different sports have different output requirements, some requiring greater max/absolute strength, some requiring greater power, or speed-strength, or reactive strength (elastic strength), or max speed, or agility, or various types of endurance.

Many of the aforementioned qualities require a base amount of maximal strength to be developed effectively, so in many sports where max strength is not particularly important in the latter stages, a base level of strength is required to adequately develop the other strength qualities that are exhibited within the sport.

For instance, in a very oversimplified way of looking at things without considering things like technique and skill: a power based sport such as Wrestling doesn't really require the ability to shift 300+kg of load if you're fighting against 80kg opponents. Instead, it requires you to be able to produce and exceed the force necessary to shift your opponent's load sooner than your opponent is able to do the same, or able to produce enough to respond to your force. However, if your opponent is heavier than your max you won't be able to shift him at all, or if your opponent is TOO CLOSE in load to your max, a few attempts at throwing him will exhaust your strength capacity, or simply be too close to your max to exhibit the force at a fast enough rate. A greater strength base ensures your capacity does not get exceeded, and allows you to develop the power necessary to succeed.

Strength, as a whole, also reduces the risk of injury.

Strength in sport is using all your body parts and interacting along with it.......like Basketball you run to go get the ball and try to shoot in the hoop; soccer you run to go get the ball to score in the goal; football you run to get the ball to go into touchdown; tennis you run to smack the ball using a racket; volleyball moving you feet to hit the ball over the net...basically you using all your energy in a sport
