It was invented by Sherman Poppen as a toy for his daughter in 1965. It then elevated to being a children's toy in the late 60's. In the early 70's, the first competition was arranged. During the seventies, several competitions were held. Jake Burton Carpenter invented Burton Snowboards. He invented and popularized the word "snowboard" to replace the previous description of snurf. He also was one of the people that invented bindings, standard on all snowboards today.
The first world championship was held in 1979 (still under the name "Snurfing"). Carpenter was denied access due to his board not being the standard Snurfing board. He was instead put into the Modified Division (which had no other competitors).
By the early eighties, the pioneers of Snowboarding had developed and improved the "Snurfer" into a far more modern-working snowboard.
Snowboarding faced issues when its popularity grew enough that boarders started showing up at snow resorts. At the peak of the battle against snow-boarding, park officials widely took a stance against snowboarding. At the apex, only seven percent of resorts allowed snowboarders. Others made boarders take a skills test and pass it before they were allowed access to chairlifts.
By the nineties, most hill had seperate runs for boarders. Despite the resistance, snow-boarding pushed on to become an accepted sport.
In 1998, the Olympics brought snow-boarding in.
